GPS + Mobile Marketing = Goodness

The cover story of WIRED Magazine’s January issue provides an exciting look into the possibilities that recent GPS advancements and the proliferation of 3G Mobile devices provide to advertisers.

My faves:
iNap – Travel alarm that uses GPS to pinpoint your location, and wake you moments before your destination to make sure you don’t sleep through your stop (not that this has ever happened to me or anything…).
ShopSavvy – Scan a barcode at the store using your phonecam to check competitive prices (online and at other retailers). Also gives access to product reviews. Think about the implications on pricing, when retailers know they need to be competitive or you will walk out of their store and buy the product from their competitor.
Imagine the marketing possibilities GPS brings to the forefront, and the exciting benefits as a consumer. Using GPS to pinpoint someone’s location, send messages to them at the mall, with a coupon good only that day, and their loyalty card balance, a reminder of an item on their wish list, and a relevant perk (i.e. buy this book at Barnes & Noble today and get a free small Starbucks coffee from the attached store).
So cool. So fun. So real.
The Third Screen is going to be a lot of fun in ‘09. Lots of possibilities. Lots of innovation.
Not to nerd out, but this is such an exciting time to be in digital marketing.

Dig iNap a lot (am always afraid I'll miss my stop on the MetroNorth to CT).

On the GPS messaging, though, do you really want people sending you messages out of the blue? I'm a bit worried that this won't be used responsibly and will just lead to more spam in the world.
Good point on the Spam Noah, and it would have to be Opt-In. But like the email newsletters I opt-into, I would be interested in receiving messages from a handful of vendors that are really valuable to me. I.e. A GPS-served coupon for $5 off at Newbury Comics would likely prompt me to stop in and pick up that CD I'd been meaning to check out, or sway me to drop into Starbucks for an impulse buy.

I agree that with great power comes great responsibility, and it should never be exploited in a "Minority Report" kind of way.

Hi we kind of need your email for security purposes. We promise to never ever give it to deposed Prince Casper Otobo.
