Intern Q & A

Where are you from?
Born & raised in Livonia, Michigan, 20 minutes from Detroit. Everyone and their mother in Michigan goes to Canada for their 19th birthday because of the lower drinking age. lived in 3 houses in michigan, all in the same city, every time we would just move like a mile further from 8 Mile. Yes 8 Mile road, like the movie.
Where did you go to college, and what did you study? I overheard you talking about photography…
I’m going to Columbia College in Chicago. I’m pursuing a degree in photography. The photo department offers a Flash dev class and an HTML class, so I started dabbling in web design and coding. It’s definitely captured my interest. Next semester, I’m venturing into the Interactive Arts and Media department where I will be taking an intensive advanced ActionScript class. My interest in web design led me to TBG.
What made you want to intern at TBG?
I started reading the many articles on the website about what TBG believes in and stands for, how it’s absurd to compromise your creativity, how you think things should and can be run differently than these large ad agencies. As I grew so interested in your concepts, I became an avid barbariangroup.com reader. You can’t help but hear this voice talking to you. It has so much passion! You know what you want and you’re putting it all out there for people to hear. Not only can you feel the driven, ambitious attitude behind the Barbarian Group, but you’re so witty, edgy, and everyone has fun with each other. Places like this rarely exist! You play video games. Take naps. You understand that we’re all human and need to have play time to decompress whatever heavy material we have been dealing with all day. And I wanted so badly to be a part of such an amazing company. So I’m here to learn, and be a sponge. Absorb as much as possible.
What’s the next big thing you wanna learn how to do?
I’d like to learn how to create 3D animation. AS3, papervision….something along those lines. But that is maybe a little too ambitious. Don’t get me wrong, I want to learn everything I can about the business/marketing side of everything. I truly want to learn how TBG starts from an idea and it becomes live. The workflow. And yes, that’s a lot, and I know we usually have to customize it per client. But I want to learn about the whole process, know it, understand it.
When will you be graduating? Do you have any plans for post-grad life?
I graduate in about a year or year and a half, depending how many credits i am going to load on this last year. I will definitely be relocating to NYC when I am done with school. I love it here.
How many pairs of shoes?
Approximately 30 pairs.
Film or digital?
I shoot both film and digital. Film for personal work. Digital for commercial work. I always print digitally.
Weapon of choice? (I mean camera. My Lubitel 166 Universal is my fav.)
It would have to be the zone vi field camera that I had the privilege of using for a month, but I can’t afford to buy one yet… I own a canon 30D, Yashica twin lens reflex, and numerous 35mm’s. But I borrow more cameras from friends than I use my own. If I had my choice I would be shooting with a Hasselblad and have a zone 4 field camera for serious work. And have a Phase One back or two.
Elvis or the Beatles?
The Beatles. Ironically, when I was younger we moved into this house that had the Yellow Submarine mural painted on the basement wall, along with an over abundance of green shag carpeting. I was changed for life.
How is NYC treating you?
I’m loving NYC. Right now I’m living in east village where we have this lengthy 5 bedroom apartment and my roommates have ambitiously decided to start building a pond. Yea there’s a 5 foot hole in my backyard right now. Its hilarious. We planted a tree. Mind you, it is Manhattan. The yard is incredibly mini but we’re making it work. I can’t wait to have the pond kick-off party and BBQ the rest of the summer. I’m not going to want to leave, but I think its important to finish up my degree.
