New Wal Mart Logo

What does everyone think of the new Wal Mart logo? I’m on the fence about it. It seems so friendly, so safe, so… not massive and terrifying and monolithic, but, then, I suppose that’s the point, right? I’m assuming the little gif in the WSJ isn’t the perfect, final version, but all in all, I think the logo actually looks pretty good.

I really like the new logo. It is a natural evolution from the branding campaign they have been running over the last year in print, TV and instore. They started bringing the "spark" into use last fall and its been playing a bigger part since then. I'm curious to see if they really depart too far from the use of blue but we'll see. Overall I think it is pretty exciting...especially as a marketer on the ground in NW Arkansas where my day job is working as a supplier to Walmart.

My only question how they will do the Walmart dance without the squiggle in the middle (which if you havent been to one of their Saturday morning meetings, that reference might not make any sense).
If I saw the new logo for the first time I'd have no idea how to pronounce it ... Walm-art?

I like the 1964 Frontier Font Logo: http://www.underconsideration.com/brandnew/archives/less_hyphen_more_burst_for_wal.php
My, my, so internetty. The typeface is fine, a little wobbly enough to make it a tad interesting. The sunshine/exclamation/burst is just odd. What's it supposed to mean? Looks too technology-related to me.
What's up with the burst anyway? It seems to be the new go-to logo-mark. I'm worried it's becoming what the oval was from the late 90's logos. Overall I get an even more I Heart Huckabees feel than with the previous logo.

It looks like Target, except the "target" has been replaced by an abstracted sphincter, which is about right for the brand.
And a quote from Paul Rand:

"A logo derives its meaning from the quality of the thing it symbolizes, not the other way around."

Yeah.

I hate it. But then I also hate Walmart.

I wonder what Julie Roehm thinks of it?
Ha, I'm not the only one who thinks it looks like Walm-Art: http://www.frederiksamuel.com/blog/2008/07/walmart-rebranding.html
I think its just really plain. And I'm bothered by the fact that the so-called "burst" is larger than the lettering and practically screaming at me. Maybe its trying to distract me from the fact that its representing Walmart.
New Logo = Lipstick
Wal * Mark = Pig
To me it looks downright European. Like they're ripping off the Parmalat logo or something: http://www.parmalat.com/
